Clothed or unclothed

I know that some of you have your preferences as to how you store your silver bars. I myself am torn between keeping the factory wrapping on them for protection and removing said wrapping for ease of storage/stacking. What say you my fellow Gimmers? Does it really matter to you that your bars remain shiny and new looking? Or, are you hoping for some toning and a look to the bar that says "Hey I'm precious metal, I am what I am".

I prefer my bars toned but I also realize that upon resale there is lots of people who would rather have shiny. It wont matter if you sell to a dealer

i keep them in plastic since one day they will be sold and people like original plastic for some reason since that usually means untouched by filthy fingers.

Okay, Im new here so maybe my opinion only counts for half a vote. But FWIW, IMHO when it comes time to sell a dealer isnt going to care, and for d*mn sure a smelter isnt going to care. Some people get hung up on the shiny appearence but that [I]really[I] should only apply to numismatics. Ive got roughly two thirds of my stash in tubes, air tites, etc but thats only because they came that way. Had they not been sealed it would not have stopped me from pulling the trigger on the transaction. I guess I lean more towards age old comment that "silver is silver". Although I do understand that there are certain instances where they may not always apply 100%.

I was at a dealer once who was being asked for an offer on a dirty old 100-ounce bar. The customer was disappointed with the offer, so the dealer told him it was lowered because of the condition of the bar. Then the dealer pulled out a shiny 100-ounce bar from his vault, put it next to the dirty one, and asked the customer which one he thought would be easier to sell.

Of course, it was a bit of a show, because I'm sure the dealer was simply going to clean the bar up himself. So his lower offer was really the cost of having to clean the bar himself.

Lesson learned: Clean your silver up a little before you go to sell it.

I would think another reason for removing the protective plastic would be to hear the "Clink-Clink" of bars being stacked.

New bard i like to keep shiny, yet still be able to take them out and fondle.

Any old Engelhard loaves, or poured bars definitely in the nude.

That's like fondling through a raincoat. :signs14:

As long as they end up in my hands, I don't really care if they are dressed or not. :36_3_13:

i've taken out every ounce i've ever bought.

i find the only people who really care about it being all shiny are people who have 1 five ounce bar, and that's their whole pm stash.

I leave them as I get them. If there wasn't a "premium" for shiny looking bars, I'd take them out. That would make stacking them much easier.

Re: Clothed or unclothed

For me it depends on the condition of the silver bar, if I buy a silver bar that is nice and shiny or if it has a little toning on it, then I will "cloth" it. If I buy a silver bar that already has a lot of toning on it, then I will leave it "unclothed".
